The Cantabrian Sea is beautiful but moody: cool water year-round, four seasons in a day, and tides that can completely reshape a break. Here's the essentials.

Autumn (Sep–Nov) is the golden window — first powerful Atlantic swells, warm water, fewer tourists and the summer NE onshores fading away. Spring is great for experienced surfers. Winter brings the biggest swells for experts; summer is smaller and ideal for beginners.
Summer (Jun–Aug) delivers the glassy, calm mornings SUP dreams are made of — head out early before the afternoon breeze. Sheltered rías (Ribadesella, Villaviciosa, Navia), harbours (Cudillero, Luarca, Llanes) and the shallow pool at Poo work even on windier days.
Asturias isn't only for the water — its sea cliffs are some of the best coastal soaring in northern Spain. The 🪂 Cabo Negro cliffs above Xagó give clean NE ridge-lift, La Providencia / La Colina in Gijón offers easy tandem flights over the city beach, and the Sierra del Cuera and Sierra del Sueve ridges deliver big ridge-runs above the eastern coast. Always fly with a licensed local school and check the Windguru forecast on each card first.
